I wonder how things went...

I was out  today for appointments (believe me-it wasn't fun...lots of tests and pokes, blech) so there was a substitute. Your kiddo will be able to give you the ins and outs of the atmosphere of the classroom but I know what was supposed to happen. Today was Augustine's first day and I hope it went well. For meeting, students shared how they are going to help every student be able to learn. They proved that they knew the spelling generalization by finding words in books and around the room that also followed the pattern-short vowel sounds in multiple syllable words. Then, they continued on in the writing process. Hopefully, most of them finished today. The substitute read, One Green Apple about a girl that is new to the country and school and what she felt like being new. They then were to talk about how to help Augustine feel more comfortable. (In the book, it was a friendly smile that really helped.) They continued looking at non-fiction text to find some of the specific text features, read independently and visited the library in Reader's Workshop. In Math Workshop, they continued with their Choice work from yesterday so worked with patterns and practiced place and value. They worked on their Ohio Studies Weekly about Ohio and the United States in Social Studies. As long as there is a good report from the sub, we'll get a potato head piece and we'll have to count because we should be getting pretty close to our first celebration! I'm crossing my fingers!
